Pirate radio was NOT illegal... 16 Years, 2 Months ago  
when it started.
That was the entire brilliant point of being broadcast from international waters JUST outside Britain.

It irritates me when people say it was illegal. It wasn't until they changed the law (they like doing that).

I'm no lawyer, but - technically speaking - pirate radio was not illegal even after the law was changed: It was only illegal for a british citizien or company to work on, advertise on etc. an offshore radio station.

Is it true that John Lockwood (EMI) und Bill Townsey (Decca) were against pirate radio because it was a pr-platform for independent labels?

And why did the big labels loose more market share after 1967 (after "order" was restored)?
