It has received over 10 million views on Youtube, resulting in Chris Brown catapulting to the top of the charts again and I doubt anyone at his record company would know how to break a Chris Brown record bearing in mind his negative publicity.

It took an obscure wedding becoming a surprise Youtube hit to do this. I think this tells us a lot about how to break a record in this day and age.

On the other board they are talking about how a 20k music video is still needed and a novice with a camcorder has received worldwide distribution for his $70 feature film, in time for Halloween.

We have lost the plot in the music industry.

this is a home video....it wasn't designed to 'break' a record....its a fluke...a happy accident (to Chris Brown anyway!)!

The $70 movie was made by pulling in a load of favours It couldn't have been done without knowledge, experience and good will.

These kind of 'happy accidents' have been around since rocknroll/movies began - long may they continue...

But these things happen relatively rarely compared to the amount of marketing that needs to be done to get a piece of work heard/seen....

or do you think we can have a hit every time by making a goofy home vid with a camcorder and sticking it on youtube? or get a load of mates and some fake blood and we'll have a hit at Cannes?

or maybe you should find that plot yourself and give it a good read....

The above are no more flukes than any other "hit" in the music business. The experts gamble at best by making "educated" guesses or using market research and surveys to guage the public mood.

No one has the ears to predict a hit time and time again and make it happen. It is all as a result of happy accidents.

You also miss the point of my email but then again you were not interested in learning anything from it.

My point was about the relationship between Youtube and sales. It has more of a direct impact on sales and income than radio could ever.

You don't get it and therein lies the problem. It takes people outside the music industry to teach us in the music industry how to adapt to a changing world.

On the other site someone is arguing that you NEED a 20k music video or it's not a 'proper' video. The guy who did a $70 feature proves that is not the case. So what if you have to pull favours ? Or how about being creative like Robert Rodriguez.

Go ahead and use money to solve the problem and then you'll find out that it's impossible to recoup anything.

Get a good video up on You Tube and try and drive people to it. Better chance of success than getting a song playlisted on Radio 1 or 2.

I've just had songs of mine removed by Sabam. Sigh. Of course, I have little to say in this as I just wrote the words. So I'm going to check with the publisher how they intend to play this. I really wish they could sort this situation out.

But I'm increasingly seeing how important it is to control one's own copyrights.
