This may be the case , but as with Tony Christie , you could get 'Amarillo' on many a bargain basement 'Best Of TC' album , but still the track got back to the top of the charts and was a smash.
This track could be a sure fire No.1 if released again.

Just received interesting information from Peter Donegan 18 Years, 11 Months ago
Peter is in the recording studio at the moment re recording 'Rock Island Line' from the interest they have had on the back of the Vauxhall advert.
With the right promotion this is SURE to be a massive hit all over again!!

I say one thing for Vaxuhall. It's that they used the song from the orignal artist. No covers, no annoying children singing like in Matalan and Asda or a bunch of unknowns

for fans of Lonnie Donegan, you could do a lot worse than go and see the tribute band. It even has a former Joe Meek artist ! 18 Years, 11 Months ago
check out www.paulleegan.com/

With an extremely long time devoted vocalist. This guy was a personal friend of Lonnie actually stood in for him at his final performance when Lonnie could no longer keep on towards the end. I've seen them and it really sounds like the real thing.

For those of us who do sometimes like to live in the past,it would be worth catching this lot somewhere, if even to get your 4 Matadors, Joe meek mega rarity, signed !

I have seen Paul Leegan (see www.paulleegan.com) and what can I say - it was Lonnie Donegan in the living. I didn't like The Donegan family's own attempt it was over done and tacky, Peter Donegan doesn't give off the same as his dad although Tony sounded like him. This real show is Paul Leegan, he even has one of the 4 Matadors in his band (joe meek recorded the matadors and they where one of the bigest acts in the UK in the 60's)

His guitarist is about 22 and plays just like Albert Lee, what a sight and his bass player is is Barry Meek who we all know from touring with many famous bands in the last 30 years, he's like Duck Dunn - been on so many of them. I saw them after a mention on this site and they are superb, lets hope they get bigger now

MATADOR

Re:"Rock Island Line" by Lonnie Donegan 18 Years, 11 Months ago
I wondered where Harry Heppingstall of the Four Matadors went, he's paying tribute to the man who made us all famous yet rare receives the credit he deserves 'Lonnie'

Why no one hears of him much I don't know he was amazing even in his final years he had a superb band, the best i've heard is Paul Leegan & the Legends, they are the next best thing - agree fully with the comments of the writer above - i thought little of Lonnie's own family's attempt.

I met Sharon Donegan at one of the shows and out of pure politness i said i enjoyed the show (as it wasn't the worst show in the world) at which point i commented on how proud she must be of Paul Leegan supporting the Donegan Legacy, to say she mauled me was an under-statement. PAUL LEEGAN & THE LEGENDS ARE THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO AND SEE THEM - saw them at Maddermarket theatre this year... http//www.paulleegan.com

just found the message board through google. i've been to see the paul leegan tribute band and the only word for them is 'brilliant'. An excellent set, well performed, a definate must see. Even if you've never listened to music of this genre before, give it a go, you won't be dissapointed.

Hi Peter Welcome to the Tipsheet 18 Years, 10 Months ago
We get around 10,000 visits a day so sadly cannot say who posted the message above but hopefully it's accurate.
It appears there are two slightly rival tribute outfits to your magnificent Dad (I met him only once at a photoshoot/reception).
But I'm delighted that his timeless talent is getting recognised once more.

Seems the Vauxhall ad has got quite a few people talking!

I have to admit that a year ago I wouldn't have had a clue what the song was, and who wrote and performed it (don't hit me!).

Over the past year though, I've had chance to listen to more and more of Lonnie's material, and didn't quite realise the impact he'd had an popular music (you'll have to forgive me as I'm 23 and still learning about the influences on my music heroes, the Beatles).

I was lucky enough earlier this year to get to see Paul Leegan and the Legends tribute band performing (in Newark, of all places), and it was an absolutely great performance and it had a real sense of fun and energy from start to finish. During the interval I was able to talk to Paul and some of the other guys, and discovered that he and Lonnie were also friends - a great night out. I'd definitely go and see them again, and am hoping they come back to the area soon.

I know the Vauxhall ad has had people my age talking about Rock Island Line, and who is performing it and can they get it on iTunes. Well... I'm glad I can tell them all about it!
