A film made in South Africa with no stars, a first time director (Neill Blomkamp and on a budget of 30 million Dollars. The copy i saw may have been a bit rough around the edges but it is an amazing movie and i cant wait to see it again. For maximum effect do not watch this movie on illegal copies. This one is worth a visit to the cinema. First half is a semi documentary style and then it explodes into action. The violence is brutal and often shocking. Theres no romantic interludes between the leading actors and theres a great lead performance from newcomer Sharlto Copley as the hero of the piece. Not since Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead 2 has an character taken such punishment in a movie. Peter Jackson has backed another winner with this one. There is already talk of Oscar nominations and there are plans for a sequel.District 9 arrives at cinemas here on September 4th.
