It's always been there and it's always worried me.

BGT seems to have less of the "sneer at the defective" element.

The X Factor used to be the participant up against just three judges. Now they are up against the baying mob. See Saturdays review by Charlie Brooker in the Guardian Guide.

After reading Ben Eltons 'Chart Throb' I won't be watching X Factor or the like again. Although the book is a work of fiction, I couldn't help but realise a lot of what it was reporting was probably close to what happens in real life. Nasty stuff.

Oh, and I agree Charlie Brooker is great.

Complete agree - they've ruined X Factor.
Also completely agree - Ben Elton's novel. Throughout last year's series could almost check off each ploy in the book against a similar scenario in the show.
In some ways made the series quite entertaining!
