Just having mentioned cover art in the Bob Dylan Christmas thread it set me wondering ... how important do people think cover art is? Does decent cover art draw you to an album or book? I know I was drawn to the Sacred Miracle Cave's album because I liked the cover art so I took it to the checkout and asked if they'd play a track for me. I might have otherwise passed it by. Same with a few other items.

I try not to judge anything by the cover, but you're right that we often do so. A cover design can have impact, although perhaps less so with mp3 downloads. We live in an image conscious society and so people want to see a picture with a product.

I'll have to try and think of some of my favourite album cover designs.

I think that cover art is still important in the MP3 age, and should be bared in mind in it`s selection as to how it will view on an I-Pod or Blackberry etc.
We can`t de-invent something, we have to roll with what we have. The Victorians achieved excellent paintings in miniature as a pretty good craft.

Cover art adds to the musical experience, as well as serving to attract the browsers. Long may it continue.
