Re:Midweeks - NEW CHARTS NEEDED 15 Years, 7 Months ago
It is time for the MUSIC INDUSTRY to stand up and do the following :

TV TOP 20

NON TV TOP 20

We need to have two charts again so that the TV companies can live in the World that they have created.

By doing this we open up the charts back to artists who Simon Cowell and the TV channels and their huge advertising reach.

Yes - in a way this is a defeat for everyone by Simon Cowell. But the alternative is that the TV dominates music and we get KARAOKE hits for the rest of our lives.

I am not against the TV hit machine - by all means give it super status by having its own chart. This means its own artists will have more of a chance of charting as well.

Perhaps KING OF HITS can divide the CURRENT TOP 40 into the two charts ( I dont have the data ) Each MONDAY the two charts could be published on this forum and I am sure people would be interested to see what the REAL CHRISTMAS number one would be and so on.

Time for action - is it possible for the FORUM chart compilers to do this ? We already have the great FAB Chart on Sundays which reflects more than just the sales of the mega corps.

This FORUM could be the place where once again MUSIC comes first rather than the way in which these TV Shows have now become gross caricatures of what they set out to be.

The FUTURE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY depends on us taking action ourselves - and action that does not require MONEY - just someone who can split the chart into two.

I will then follow the NEW MUSIC CHART rather than the TV chart. This could be applied to midweeks as well.

VIVA LA REVOLUTION !!!!

That would have prevented several great theme tunes from charting in the past. Music enters the chart because it is popular, and this should always be the main factor. The current fad of X-Factor style TV hype will pass and then the public will latch onto something else. I recall the medley phase of the mid 80s with Jive Bunny / Back to the 60s / Stars on 45, etc. It was massive and it stopped many good artists from reaching higher chart positions with original material, but it passed. These things happen.

JC - I am not suggesting it for the 70s or 80s. Things have changed - so the chart needs to reflect what is happening now.

There are already loads of different charts.

We need a boost for everyone who is not on X Talent has got Factor Fame Factory Battle of the Orange.

We need to bring back REAL music into the charts rather than the insipid Karaoke versions of old tunes which are now clogging up the airways.

New music is being strangled at birth because labels quite understandably wont take a risk. We need a new chart.

Ali is too good, we need a new heavy weight title.

O'sullivan is too good, we need a new World Championships.

Fogarty’s too good, we need a new Superbikes.

Etc. etc.

Get a new strategy.

There are quite a few Indie charts on the internet. I plug the FAB Chart which does it's own bit to highlight unsigned talent. I think the brutal truth, however, is that very few people are interested in music charts nowadays. I know a few teens who didn't even know there was a chart (BBC), let alone who's in it. They now know, but show virtually no interest. One began a conversation with "You know that list you showed us .." Even the word 'chart' didn't click. So, producing a new chart will have minimal effect, unless it has some unique angle / gimmick to help attract listeners.

Yes - it's not the chart, it's what is attached to it. In the 60s, the chart meant nothing in America; it was only huge in Britain because of Top of the Pops.

My Pop-I crusade (Popularity Index) is still bubbling.

I still believe that the chart plus TOTP plus Radio One (or whichever is currently the most popular national radio station) should all come in one entertainment package. But to make that work again, Radio One would need to employ some appealing personalities, which it is seriously lacking at the moment.

If I was in charge I'd also feature a "supergroup" performance at the end of each show where artists who had appeared on the show would all combine to do a live number. That would be unique.
