Iconic London Venue under threat of closure 15 Years, 6 Months ago

Truly shocking. Please can everyone lend their support to the campaign being run to save the venue. If anyone lives nearby or has a free night then why not visit the place and watch a show and buy a couple of beers. Some major acts are lending their support by playing in January which may turn around the deficit.

If anyone has some spare cash then why not not invest it in this venue to keep it going. In this recession if the music industry loses one of its legendary flagship venues ( 47 year history ) then the future is bleak.

and everyone can :

Iconic. Legendary
For gawd's sake , it 's a pub which no longer attracts punters to see bands in South London.

The local press have called it ICONIC - what is wrong with that ?

How many other venues have continuously put on rock music in the same place for 47 years......cant think of many in London.

Therefore the tag is well earned.

KOKO used to be a theatre and dance hall and been closed for much of the time...

Hammersmith Apollo was a cinema until the 70s and only stopped being one in the 80s.

The Marquee is gone.

The Barfly chain was started in 1998 and Mean Fiddler in 1991. The Academy group started less than 15 years ago. Brixton was a cinema and unused for much of the time - Shepherd Bush was a BBC theatre.....and so on.

Can anyone name a rock music venue which has been in existence for near or more than 47 years.

Therefore the title ICONIC is well earned.

Most venues in London have been empty this year - even the O2 after the lost the MJ tour were dark much of the summer.

The Half Moon is no different - we are in a recession but it does not stop a venue having a history above and beyond most other venues.

The Half Moon is one of the last of the venues in this area. Hammersmith used to have the Palais - Greyhound - Kings Head and Putney used to have another venue that escapes me......

London's venues are disappearing and the two main venue owners are going to have an almost monopoly. But even they are closing some venues and many venues are dark in Jan ( and much of Feb ).

Lets support the Half Moon and music venues in general.

I agree with BR, The Half Moon Putney is an iconic venue and anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about music and should not be contributing to a music based website.

The Hammersmith Apollo is also an iconic venue of equal standing. It is wrong to say it was a cinema in the 60's/70's. Although it was called the Hammersmith Odeon it only showed movies because management decided it would have a "7 Days a week lights On" policy so there were ocassions when there was no show a movie was shown, some months there would be 25 live shows and 5 days of movies. I think any venue that staged a Buddy Holly concert in the 50's and is still putting on music today is Iconic...No Sleep til Hammersmith!
