TOPIC: Good luck Pete

Good luck Pete 15 Years, 4 Months ago
Pete is a friend as is Andrew Lloyd Webber.
I wonder if they will do as well as I did.
Not that anyone is allowed to mention me.

Hmm. I wouldn't exactly tremble in my boots if he was the competition, WADR. Odd that after the debacle of ALW and Diane Warren last year, the BBC should go for another middle-aged has-been.

But enough whingeing; who is there out there with good pop songwriting sensibilities?

I came across this guy on Twitter: www.simonrushby.com/

Yes Mike; when I took over I did so as a finder of a winner, not the writer of one. So I looked and searched and came up with Love City Groove, then Just A Little Bit and finally, dear Kimberley and Love Shine A Light.

Some refer to it as the Golden Age of Eurovision.

I don't think age has anything to do with writing popular songs. Many recent hits have been covers of songs written by middle aged (at least) has beens; or if not written by then based on songs written by.

I preferred it when the British end of the competition was an open song writing contest. I have memories of a trophy being given to the writers of 'Beg Steal or Borrow' in 1972. The New Seekers sang all of the entries and then performed the winner. Did Roy Wood write one of the songs? My favourite that year was the one which came second - 'One By One' written by Eddie Sego and Mike Leander.

Just googled and found that it was 'Songs of Praise' which Roy Wood wrote for the 1972 Song for Europe contest.

Youtube link.

I'm not so sure it's a good thing to have only one songwriter. Nobody else to choose from if he or she dries up and can't produce anything worthwhile. Competition can often inspire quality.

btw Cat, love that Roy Wood song. I hear he's working on a new album.
