TOPIC: Well I thought the Eurovision show was awful

Well I thought the Eurovision show was awful 15 Years, 3 Months ago
Except for the magic moment when Graham Norton lost the autocue and the expression of pure panic on his face was priceless.
Josh can sing but the song's in the wrong key for him. And it's not much of a song. That's why I always went for a variety of writers. Nobody can come up with a hit every time.

Perhaps, in a few years, the BBC will decide it's better to have a Vile Pervert picking the entry again and winning.

In my dreams.

The song sounded like a Kylie/Donovan track from the 90's. I've got a bad feeling about this year.

The song is like a wave of aural beige. It seems to keep on trying to find a song inside the song, like feeling for a coin down the back of the couch.

I didn't see it but, from what I've heard, I didn't miss much. Does this Josh has another name or does he just go by Josh?

Two words spring to mind.

Dated and Hopeless.

A complete unknown with a song that sounds like it would have been on Sonia's first album as a filler. The entire show looked like a karaoke competition and it's back to the bottom 5 for the UK.

Would you prefer Miss King back in charge Mike?

I've always wanted you back in charge. Whilst I might be rude and offensive to you at every given opportunity, your ability as provider of quality music has never been in any doubt. Your finals were not foregone conclusions (with scripts) as the last 2 have been and you were always up to date and provided quality music and performers. The BBC have cut off their noses to spite their two faces. Even the fans are mortified.

You've never been either rude or offensive to me Mike - your (late) Mumbly would not allow it!

Popbitch, who adores Eurovision, was so horrified she switched it off halfway. She points out that the overall standard has dropped to the level it was before I took over and entered Love City Groove, Just A Little Bit and Love Shine A Light.

Cyril Ornadel has offered to do it next year so we should do better.

You rescued this event in 1995 and within 2 years won it. Track records speak for themselves.

And the awful thing about that kind of format is - you compare the great old hit songs with the crap new one.
I've been singing Too Many Broken Hearts all day! That would have done nicely.

Comments appear to be almost universally negative; but we all keep our fingers crossed and it is a very, very bad year for all entries - I've not heard a real hit yet.

I still can't get 'What's a Girl to Do' out of my head! Maybe next year someone should enter a song dedicated to the glory of Eurovision. At least that would confuse the stupid people. Could they bear to see it bomb?

I'm getting half a dozen e-mails from strangers every day at the moment asking me to take over the UK Eurovision contast again. Sadly, as long as the BBC allows policy to be dictated by tabloid headline writers and not good sense, this appears impossible.

JK stop bigging yourself up every opportunity you have. Contrary to your opinion
you are not the saviour of the music industry/Eurovision/the majors etc.
Get over it! For what it's worth the song is good and the UK will do well. If you
think getting "serious" songs into Eurovision will help us win then you are more
deluded than you realise.

Nothing to do with JK "bigging himself up". The show was a disgrace and would not have been so had JK been in charge. There was not one of those acts that could be described as "quality". Not one good enough to have won a karaoke contest in a pub let alone an international song contest. Whoever put this show together should never be allowed near a tv studio again. This was appalling in every aspect and an excruciating ordeal to watch. There was never any doubt who was the winner no matter how they tried to disguise it as a contest. This was Eurovision shunted off into the sidings and given a mediocre budget, The rest of Europe is laughing and not at Nortons tired brand of cliched camp. One can only hope we dazzle with the stage set because we ain't going to do it with song or singer.

Jk did a very good job finding the winner for 1996 with Katrina and the Waves and "love shine a light". It was the highest score at the time. However by this time the Eurovision was already an outdated institution and "Love shine a light" was, I believe the only British winner not to get to number one.

"Love Shine a Light" is also the least memorable British winner, in your heart of hearts jk, you know this is true. Ask anyone to name all 5 British winners, most people remember Sandie Shaw, Lulu (joint winner), Brotherhood of man, ,Bucks Fizz, and a few will remember Katrina. Also who was the last winner from any country to have a big hit in the uk. Dana International?, and that wasn't that big. The Eurovision winner always used to be a sure-fire number one. Not anymore the winners are usually forgotten by the monday after the event and sink into obscurity.

All the British winners have involved women performing, we should continue this trend. The noughties was the first decade since the 50's that we didn't have a British winner, and I don't think that this year will be any different.

I know nothing about Eurovision beyond the most parochially obvious, but do any of these songs actually sell that much elsewhere? It bemuses me because little of what seems to attract votes sounds anything like what tends to dominate the charts on the continent. As for the UK's Song for Europe process, I guess it must create a strange air of disorientation for anyone involved, because surely Waterman is normally far too savvy in the 'real' world to tolerate any of the tosh that passed as a contender last week. But all logic says that JK should be back in control - as has been said, the track record says it all.
