In an absolutely awful Eurovision field... 15 Years, 2 Months ago
Germany looks the probable winner (ghastly lyrics about painting toenails).

I see the UK entry is - in some places - 200-1!

I think I'd rather sit through an Omnibus edition of Casualty. And I hate Casualty.

I really must get round to listening to this years Eurovision entries. I haven't even heard the UK song yet.

Just watched Germany's entry.

Good from the point of view that it sounds current, but she seems to be affecting an odd Lily Allen mockney accent- unless that's the way she speaks naturally.

not only does she sing about painting her toenails, she also sings about changing her underwear

Don't think it's winning material, as it lacks that soaring quality that songs like Fairytale had. Also, worse still- there is no key change!

I think Georgia stands a chance. Not my cup of tea, a bit too Céline Dion for moi, but it's a decent song, she's classy and it has a 'dramatic' ending.

And there is no hook. Just boring from start to finish.

This fast version is a little bit better:

But the voting public decided against this version / singer.

Unless Dick van Dyke taught her English on his breaks from filming Mary Poppins, I would say that's unlikely. Germany was favourite with the bookies last time I looked but can't really see the appeal myself. I love the Israeli entry, but surely Azerbaijan has the potential hit of the contest. I do have reservations about the live performance, of which the following link is not an example, and the singer is in desperate need of some English pronunciation coaching.

Hey, Georgia is quite nice. But girls that can sing "big" songs are my guilty pleasure. Well, one of them anyway.

i think the current economic climate might have some bearing on the choice of songs ie few countries can afford to host it for 2011, i find your choice of germany surprising, i cannot see that type of song winning the contest, we shall see, but i doubt if you have put money on germany

The "countries can't afford to stage it" argument is rubbish, Tom, put about by the meejah as it's a "good story" but totally false. When we won in 1997 and I saw the potential of staging it in 1998 which we did in Birmingham, I offered to buy the rights to put it on. The BBC said "no way"! It makes a fortune for both the broadcaster and the country staging it - tourism, hotels, restaurants... and you think tickets are free? No - it is a cash cow.

thinking about it, not that i doubt what you say, if you can't make money out of a tv show with an audience reputed to be over 100 million then you never will make money out of a tv show

Sorry Tom, Dick, and indeed Harry, if he's involved. Dick, your execution of the Cockney accent was totally beyond reproach so don't sue me!

I have to say that unlike virtually everyone else, I rather like this year's contest. Admittedly, a smash hit is most unlikely to emerge, but there is a nice eclectic mix of tuneful, if occasionally arcane ditties.
