TOPIC: Album sales collapse
#59070
Album sales collapse 15 Years, 1 Month ago
Last week in America album sales totalled under 5 million.
The biggest sales week since Soundscan started was two weeks after my arrest in 2000 - when they sold 45 million.
Co-incidence?

Truly scary.

Is it over ? The music business as we know it ?

Have UK sales declined as much recently ?

It is noticable that industry forums are very very quiet. Two years ago RotD and Tipsheet would be getting 100s of posts. Some days now there is only a handful of posts and rarely does it go above 20 posts unless something major happens.

Music is still happening out there - but it seems to have withdrawn and become almost a local thing.

But of course it's all the fault of the "evil downloaders" isn't it?
Nothing to do with all the shit albums the labels foist on us.
On the other board they even rate crap like Florence (she can't sing in tune and just screeches) and Mumford & Sons, (a 15th rate Dexys soundalike) and these people are supposed to be running the music industry. No wonder it's on it's last legs!
Is it no co-incedence that the biggest concert of the year was the RATM free one in London this week? A feat which involved people on a Social network website rather than a record label!!

Yes BR and Vince - it is sad and depressing and I blame those in the industry.

Perhaps they need to sign and develop more acts like this!

Apparently just signed to Atlantic the kind of vocal quality I haven't heard in a long time -a bit retro but undeniable quality - will no doubt be dropped in a couple of months .
No I'm not connected just a fan, I'd liked to have pitched a track to her but left it a bit late.

Interesting to see that singles are still selling - as I always said, albums were generally an industry con (a way to make more money out of hit singles) - apart from the odd Pink Floyd concept album (I started concept albums - From Genesis To Revelation) - they were nine ghastly bits of shit and one hit single.

Thanks to downloads that strategy got rumbled. But we still need a FILTER process to bring great music to the mass public; we did it for radio and TV producers but we need to come up with another tool.
