Biggest smash hit of 2010? 15 Years ago
I think this is going to be huge.
A hit for the original (Cat Stevens) and The Tremeloes in the 60s, of course, and the Mavericks again (in the 90s) - I think it's fantastic. I have to declare an interest - they are very good friends of mine (Tommy was one of my Editors on 65 My Life So Far - he now has blue hair).
But this is a new song to the new You Tube generation and is going to be the smash of the summer.
Enormous.
200,000 views on You Tube in 12 hours!
Sons of Admirals.

Re:Biggest smash hit of 2010? 15 Years ago
You can't be serious JK this the biggest smash of 2010 ? I don't think so. It doesn't
even come close. But each to their own I suppose.

I always loved The Mavericks version (too young to remember the others) but this is way better and far more NOW. I see it's already in the iTunes chart after only a day. Not sure if it will be the biggest of the year - Lady GaGa takes some beating; but Top Five definitely. The girls will love 'em too.

Sorry JK, but if this turns out to be huge, I'll eat my keyboard.

The band look terrible. Terrible hair and terrible clothes.

The video is cheesy and amateurish.

And the song, I'm afraid, is just not very good.

I think this will indeed be a Marmite hit; love it or hate it. And I think older people simply won't get it; they think Justin Bieber is the look and the sound for young girls today. Let's see who's right. Bet that generation never understood The Sex Pistols.

I'm delighted that there have been 150 views to the thread already in just over an hour.

Clearly there are SOME music lovers still interested in hearing the tips of others.

Plenty of djs on Radio 2 will be reminded of the previous versions and probably give it plenty of exposure. The video's naff but I can see the song attracting quite a range of age groups.

It is a "penny dreadful" , or pulpy trash as the americans would say, but it could work if Radio 1 and Capital picked up on it.The power of You Tube won't be enough , they will need radio and TV.

By close of play today it will have had more views on You Tube in a day than the Mavericks have had for their dated video in ten years! Compare the two; the Mavs is so middle aged; Sons of Admirals is 2010.

Been a fan of Charlie and co since I tipped his Chameleon Circuit songs on here a few months back. At only 19 he really is talented and has a wonderful line on lyrics. It's like a breath of fresh air.

400,000 views in 36 hours - huge American response. Most watched video in the world at the moment.

double click on the pic to get to the actual You Tube page, in case you want to read some of the 11,000 comments (hilarious - this is the response from kids that The Beatles used to get).

I find this quite interesting. They are breaking not just because of the music. In fact
the music is NOT why they are breaking. They have 67m video views between them, mostly doing
things that Youtubers actually love to watch. They are making a living off the Youtube ad revenue
and royalties so I am all for that. The song is a grower and should do a few thousand sales
on iTunes but it needs to hit 30m views to be a genuine smash. It's far too early to call it the
biggest hit of 2010 when video hits on Youtube run into the tens of millions of views. But
I like them and I like how they are doing it. Resist the temptation to sign a record deal unless
millions change hands first.

Yeah that sounds about right. What a lot of people are not realising is that free streams on Youtube
is not necessarily going to yield any download sales NOR should it. They are two different formats and
a lot of music people still think of free music as promotion to sell real records or downloads. Welcome
to the real world of streaming media.

400,000 free streams translating to 600 sales is actually quite good. They should pick up around 400 quid
in advertising, more than they would get in the download sales and of course the numbers of viewers will
grow and grow. Sales might not.

Actually the Guardian haven’t picked up on its success, the date of the article is the 14th which is the same date it was posted on Youtube meaning the Guardian are partly responsible. This is fact, the rest is all IMO.

‘Partly responsible’ is a key phrase as there’s been a lot more marketing than just getting the Guardian involved.

And for what it’s worth... the video is better than the music but this doesn’t stop it from being cheap, pointless, forgettable and juvenile. The kids are ugly irritating rich tw@ts with mockney accents, ‘rich’ being the key word in this paragraph since the success of this has clearly been bought.
