TOPIC: Vintage TV launches today

Vintage TV launches today 14 Years, 9 Months ago
A very low-key launch: nothing on Virgin, presumably it's on Sky, and a minimal website here:

www.vintage-tv.tv/

Broadcaster Vintage TV has confirmed plans to launch a new television channel devoted to music and popular culture on Sky and Freesat later in the year.

The channel, also called Vintage TV, will start broadcasting a 24-hour schedule on the satellite platforms from September 1.

Primarily aimed at the over-50 audience, programming on the channel will focus on popular culture, music, fashion and trends from the 1940s to the 1980s.

According to the broadcaster, 40% of Vintage TV's output will be original programming, including 500 specially-created music videos and exclusive new shows.

Paul Gambaccini will be the channel's principal presenter, fronting a selection of its "major series commissions". Journalist Lesley-Ann Jones will host a talkshow welcoming a range of personalities, including Rick Wakeman, Roger Daltrey and Debbie Harry.

"I am supporting the arrival of Vintage TV because I want good performances and good shows of all eras available at all times for legal viewing by every viewer. Is this too much to ask? Up until now, it has been," said Gambaccini.

"I am hopeful that Vintage TV will change that. Quality music lives long after its composition. It does on radio, and it should on television."

David Pick, the former EMI executive who founded Vintage TV, said that the channel will be a "unique celebration" of the development of popular culture since the 1940s.

"In addition to its mix of original programming and classic concert footage, we have commissioned talented young directors to create videos for music which graced the charts prior to 1976, when music videos did not exist," said Pick, who is also the broadcaster's chief executive.

"We'll be delivering a stream of vintage musical content which isn't available elsewhere on TV. We will also draw on the wisdom and expertise of a wide range of experienced presenters and pundits to infuse yet more life into that music, allowing it to be appreciated by an even wider audience and thus treasured, as it should be, forever."

Alongside its original programming, Vintage TV will also air classic news, culture and social history material from the archives of ITN, the BBC, ILikeMusic, Channel 4, Eagle Rock and DCD Rights.

Andy Hill, chief executive of ILikeMusic, which will provide Vintage TV with archive music content, said: "Having passed the 'half-century' mark, I have been astounded by the lack of music on television for our age group.

"Its absence is even more astonishing when you consider the mind-blowing quality of music released during the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties.

"A flagging memory is one of the disadvantages of growing older. We can't always remember the tracks we misbehaved to, or the melodies we fell in love to. What we can do, however, is turn to Vintage TV, and have the time of our lives all over again."

Emmy Award-winning producer Clare Bramley will act as business development director for Vintage TV, while BBC Radio 2 producer Phil Swern will be a programming and music consultant for the channel.

Teresa Watts, formerly head of production and programming at ITV/Granada, will take up the same role at Vintage TV.

They should screen some JK shows from the 60s!

Actually, there's such a large demographic these days for, at least, the possible content of such a channel, it's odd that they're usually so unimaginative in the way they try to tap it.

I know you've asked the question, JK, but who is Prunella Minge?

Actually, I don't need to know, but would like to know a little more about her, (or him?).

Prunella, any clues to what you do/did, or who you are?

I only ask because I enjoy reading your posts almost as much, if not more, than JK's!!
