Hello Jonathan King
I am writing to inform you that a portion of the lyrics to your wonderful song "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" was used without credit or attribution, at the end of the San Francisco Chronicle column (in print and online) by Jon Carroll which ran this morning, September 17th, 2010.
It was plagiarized at the end of the latest column here...
www.sfgate.com/columnists/carroll/
(If you are checking this link in the latter part of this day or in the future, you'll need to click the "Archive" link and check the September 17th entry within there to find it.)
Jon Carroll's column of today ends with this:
"Streets full of people, all alone; roads full of houses never home; church full of singing out of tune - everyone's gone to
jcarroll@sfchronicle.com."
Jon uses someone else's words near the end of his column every time, from a song, interview, poem, novel, TV or movie script, etc., and usually does not make any reference to the writers, speakers or lyricists they came from. He made no such credit in this column. He never writes anything to lead into his sign-off paragraph like, "The following was written or spoken by..." His making the stolen writing lead into his email address makes it seem as if he wrote those words as well as the rest of his column.
I know about public domain, free speech and fair use concepts, but some think Jon's uses without permission may go beyond that, and into the realm of plagiarization, at least because it is done as part of his job, which makes money for him and that newspaper. I wonder if you agree.
Have a nice day.
