TOPIC: The Winner Takes It All
#69673
The Winner Takes It All 14 Years, 2 Months ago
OK - we publish the songs of Abba (I used to pick the singles in the 70s) but I'm happy to admit that my very favourite Abba song won the public vote (on ITV) and I actually consider it one of the ten best records ever made. So I was astonished, when I saw the film, that Meryl Streep managed to make it her own. Watch her tonight; one of the great musical film moments of all time (and Brosnan is absolutely fantastic in it too).

The Dancing Queen sequence is as glorious as I remembered it; I'm singing along in front of my telly!

The only awful thing about it being on ITV instead of the BBC - whoever chops it into chunks for the ad breaks has the finesse of a deaf and blind elephant.

Delighted to confirm my opinion that it was far and away the film of the year - that Streep should have won the Oscar for it and Pierce was brilliant.

It's fascinating that you had a hand in the decisions about Abba's singles. I was a huge Abba fan in my teens, with posters on my bedroom wall (I know....)

So I have a couple of questions....

At the time I heard that Knowing Me Knowing You was favoured over Tiger as a single. A good decision, but was it yours ?

And also, why was Eagle never released as a single?

They used to send over the demos to my partner who played them to me and I simply said "that one" - invariably it was the single.
Those days I was a huge global producer and they meant less!
I stopped when they refused to release Thank You For The Music so I refused to pick the singles any more.

Loving The Making Of... my admiration for Brosnan has exploded since Mamma Mia - I thought it gave him so many extra dimensions - courage, talent, self deprecating humour - just marvellous.

re-writing history again?

I note here
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABBA_discography

that all the follow singles to Waterloo in 1974 bombed until SOS in 75.

you really need to get out more and let the past go

I recommend the London show. It is extremely funny.
