He managed 5 years with Syco. That's a lot longer than most acts with any major record company these days. Most of the majors don't know how to handle those "difficult second albums".

It's all an example of bad music industry executive ability; instead of moving with the times (and I freely admit I was late accepting the power of the Internet but I got there in the late 90s), and instead of adapting and developing, the music executives have stumbled and fallen.
Simon discovered he was a TV executive and marketing man - so his success has been phenomenal; but his adaptation of his "label" has been dreadful.
Nobody else means a light; complete and total lack of executive talent.
The singers are there. The performers are there.
Oh - there is one - the other executive we praised on The Tip Sheet in the 90s - Richard Russell.

There isn't any real A&R skill apart from a very few -Chris Briggs and David Rose for example-and certainly none at Syco which Sony must begin to realise will be become a financial drain if all these male artists who win ,then fail so comprehensively to build a proper career.

I think Simon Cowell had lost interest in Shayne Ward ages ago. Shayne just wasn't given the right material or
managed properly. Had Mr Cowell not been concerning with his tv shows and given more time to his own acts things
may have turned out different. A great shame!

Wasn't he managed by Richard Griffith's Modest Management outfit?

I think he was and probably still is which brings us to the next point - should we be blaming managers or A&R? Or both? Or is reality TV simply not the way to find genuine talent? It just gives you quick copyists.

Like democracy - which we now know doesn't work - neither does talent picking work when you leave it to the public. Trained, experienced, intelligent experts are what's needed - not punters.

I've always said - never ask them what they want (they don't know) - tell them what they want. They will thank you.

I wanted Matt Cardie to win this year, because he impressed me over the others at some point (probably) and therefore I (probably) wanted to be proved right. I have no intention of buying his music and cringe a bit when I hear him on the radio.

Funny situation TBH.

There was nothing of notable exception with Matt Cardle. Leaving it until Christmas to release an album is a mistake. The exposure was last year. Unless you've got exceptional talent like Leona, (and interest outside the UK from the likes of Clive Davies, so it's worth the wait), then you need to get an album out as quickly as possible, compromising the quality to a certain extent if need be. The "proof of the pudding" came with Hear Say. They got their first album out a few weeks after winning Popstars, and it sold bucket loads. Their second album, which was released for the Christmas market the same year did virtually nothing! Make hay whilst the sun shines. I'll be surprised if Matt Cardle's album does any better than Joe McCeldrey's did last Christmas. And it will be "bye bye Matt" in April 2012.

Clive Davies? Joe McCeldrey? Dixie, you are truly the man with your finger on the pulse.

Apologies to you Pedant 99. My last message was created whilst time wasn't in great supply. The Davies spelling was sloppy as I know very well Clive is a Davis. The Joe one, I'm sorry to say I didn't know how he spelt his name and didn't look it up. I'll spend more attention to detail next time Pedant 99. Oh, by the way, my name is dixie, not Dixie.
