very sad news, at the age of 59, suddenly from a heart attack on Friday.
He made a batch of absolutely wonderful albums in the late seventies. I was a bit of a loner in my mid-teens and used to listen to them in my bedroom. I loved his slightly whacky nature, the oddball humour of some of his lyrics and moving simplicity of others. They spoke to me.
I was sad today. Thanks for the memories Mr Gold.
There aren't many clips on youtube of his more reflective or quirky side but I did find these, a couple of which you may know:
Very sad news. I seem to remember some of my 10cc boys were involved with him. Lonely Boy is one of my favourite songs; a great lyric and terrific chorus (and ending).
your 10cc boys (or at least a couple of them) were involved with him when they formed Wax (Building a Bridge to your Heart)
So many people seem to be dying....
on a lighter note, Andrew Gold made some hillarious podcasts a few years back, maybe you should follow his example JK. Here is his Feb 2006 cast, the man is a loon!
And I discover (Google is my friend) that his mother is Marni Nixon (extraordinary singer - West Side Story, King and I, My Fair Lady...) and his father wrote Exodus (one of the great themes).
Horrible news. A wonderful pop voice. He and Stephen Bishop were delightful, playful, West Coast pop figures for a few years. Gold became so coked up at one stage he alienated quite a few people, but he was a great talent. (I think Graham Gouldman was the only 10cc man in WAX, as it was a duo... He then guested on a reformed 10cc's album.)
JK2006 wrote: Interesting; the BBC has only just gotten onto this sad story; we were there first although The Velvet Rope reported it unconfirmed at the same time.
yes I was surprised at how slow the BBC was- very little coverage at all in the UK really.
Earlier on today i was listening to an interview with him from a couple of years back. I'd only intended to dip in as it's rather long (3 hours!) but it was such fun that I got to the end of the first part and will listen to the second. He was so funny and self-deprecating
There's a very funny part where he talks about the time when he found his song Lonely Boy listed in the Top 40 worst rock songs of all time (because of its lyrics). It's hillarious. It's exactly 53 mins 30 seconds into the link below. It's worth a listen
"Lonely Boy" was a massive hit song in the States, and part of the wave of Henry Gross/Stephen Bishop/Bertie Higgins then through to acts like Ambrosia and even the Baby's.
All having very big long lasting MOR radio hits just prior to MTV. One thing for sure they were real musicians that could play. There was really no faking it back then.
Andrew Gold played a large part in Linda Ronstadt's breakthrough, and was involved in many things musically that we for the most part are unaware of.
Another great song of his from that era, sadly missing from You Tube: How Can This Be Love. A bit Beatlesy, a tiny bit Beach Boys, but certainly high class late 70s pop:
