Patrick Wolf and Mercury- finally an enlightened attitude from a major label? 14 Years, 1 Month ago
Having been picked up and dropped by a major label in the past, Patrick Wolf is now with Mercury. They are clearly investing mega bucks in him, but in a recent interview he said that he is under no pressure to provide instant hits, and that they see him as a long term investment leaving him room to develop.

Isn't that the way it used to be?

....presumably while saying nothing about how his sound has changed dramatically (into ultra-cheesy 80s pop) since signing with them?

His sound has always varied considerably from album to album. He did a fairly pop album with Magic Position a few years back. Apparently Lupercalia was already written and demoed before Mercury heard it and offered him a deal.

I like it.

(at the risk of spamming my own thread ...)

While the singles have been quite reminiscent of the 80s (which is no problem for me!) there are plenty of layers in the album, bringing in strands of his previous stuff, such as Armistice (below) which for me is a standout track, bringing back the folk influences from earlier efforts.

Reviews are so far very good across the board from NME to the Guardian.

Just seen Patrick Wolf at Oxford O2. He fondly spoke of his early gigs at The Regal (before it became O2) and delievered a fantastic (and lengthy) set that even included a harp.

Support act 'Cock 'N' Bull Kid' were X-Factor quality. Enough said.
