Indeed. Very sad news. He was a gentleman and a true supporter - I had many kind messages from him during recent strange times.
From the Guardian in 2000...
King classes veteran TV presenter Jimmy Savile as one of his closest friends - they have known each other for 25 years. Savile once said of him: "He's a sabra. A sabra is an Israeli fruit that's prickly on the outside and all soft and lovely inside. That's Jonathan King."
He lost his mojo, as a dj & a presenter, in the 80s. However prior to that he was bloody good, and at least enough TOTP footage survives from the 60s & 70s to prove just how sharp & original he was. He also, let us not forget, more or less invented the 'disc jockey' in the late 40s by his own resourcefulness and took the 'personality radio dj' to new levels too on Radio Luxembourg back when everything on the BBC was still stiffly scripted. A very wise man who hid behind his own disguise as a protection and who also - to give him great credit - displayed great contempt in recent years at the way society & the media had become. R.I.P., sadly departed 2 days before his 85th birthday
How sad. He seemed such a force of nature I thought he'd just go on and on. Undeniably odd, but he did so many decent things. The memory that abides for me is when I saw him in action in a BBC radio studio - he had incredible technical competance and amazing timing. Underneath all the showbizzy dazzle he was a truly superb pro as a broadcaster.
My personal memory was a day my brother and I spent with him at Stoke Mandeville hospital; you would not believe the love given to him by the patients and the kindness he provided for so many. Jim was a truly decent human being.
Here's Jimmy at his sharp best - introducing JK on TOTP, 29th January 1970. I have the whole show on dvd and it both truly 'of it's time' (in the best possible way) and a masterclass in dynamic presentation
Here's also the late Benny Hill in the finest (and least hammy) impression of Jimmy I have ever seen
He was a great character, one of a kind. Did lots of work for charity and was always interesting. I grew up with "Jim'll fix-it", which has stayed in my memory all these years later.
