A long-lost performance of David Bowie performing his classic hit The Jean Genie on TOTP has finally been found thanks to a cameraman who had a copy made on 2" videotape.

The clip will be shown on Wednesday 21st December as part of this year's TOTP2 Xmas Special.

John Hensall the man responsible for copying the clip posts in this thread (few posts down) and explains what happened.
He also quite a few tapes of old TOTP so it's likely he has more lost recordings...and apparently some ITV stuff (no idea what).

Apparantly he was the man who provided TOTP with the 'fish-eye' lens effect & other special camera effects used on TOTP. The BBC declined to 'buy' his effects but Johnny Stewart advised him to start a private company and hire the equipment to the BBC which is what happened. John Hensall was then allowed to keep copies of performances utilizing this effect to form a 'work portfolio' for his company... which means there is a liklihood there are all many interesting long lost TOTP performances from 72-75 in his collection. Christopher Perry of the Kaleidoscope organisation is meeting with John in a week or so to determine what he does have worth 'recovering' from his 2" tapes

Though it's annoying from our point of view, the clip had to be removed. These events show footage on the strict grounds it's not to be broadcast elsewhere - recording and distributing like that puts the holding of future events in jeopardy. I hear good news is afoot though regarding this particular clip

Good news indeed - John Henshall has worked with Mark Cooper to ensure that The Jean Genie will be included on next weeks TOTP2 Special.
This is landmark news for another reason - up until now the BBC has always acted indifferently to 'outside' recoveries of TOTP (performances in European archives, domestic recoveries, 60s performances 'sold' to the states such as Purple Haze, Autumn Almanac & Bus Stop, etc)
