Midweeks in - Alex Day No4 and heading for the Top 3... 13 Years, 6 Months ago
Can still be Xmas No1 if - as I hope - the Wives and Dolls drop off having peaked early. ANSWERS to negative snipes on other threads - no, I have nothing professionally to do with this as I had nothing to do with Sons of Admirals but the four guys are friends of mine and benefit from the advice, encouragement, ideas and enthusiasm that friendship demands.

Alex has done virtually everything himself - although he's clearly being assisted by other friends of mine and of this board.

Of course my tried and proven formula has worked before (Cuban Boys - Nizlopi) and it will work again.

Alex was not writing hits - neither were Tommy, Charlie or Ed, that's why I advised them to form a group and record a cover song - Here Comes My Baby - which Tom produced brilliantly.

Alex wrote more and more (decent enough but not hits). Then he wrote Forever Yours. A hit. I told him so and he approached labels. No interest. So I told him how to do it independently - unsigned to any major or even publisher.

Positive thinking by intelligent people. It's not brain surgery.

Far easier to snipe and sneer and disbelieve and do nothing positive yourself. That way, dear reader, you become jaded and bored!

Sorry to rain your's and indeed Alex Day's parade but the Military Wives will outsell the young man by 7 to 1 this week. No radio play will slow him down , he may even drop back.

Jaded and Bored

Re:Midweeks in - Alex Day No4 and heading for the Top 3... 13 Years, 6 Months ago
No need to get personal JK all I am asking is that you declare your
interest and without going into too many details your method.
I see you are claiming Nizlopi as one of your own triumphs.
People who visit this board stay on here because they are interested in
music and there are some very good posts on here.
Of course I could tell he was getting formidable 'industry' support it is
obvious this was not a typical Youtube hit. Great achievement for Alex and
for the DIY community as a whole but we are also able to track things and one
of the first red flags was that all the stats on the Youtube video views was disabled so
one could not actually see where all the video views have been coming
from. Now if you cared to read my posts you will find that I do like the song
personally. It is just when you have a runaway hit there is a groundswell,
a momentum but there just was not.
If Alex Day was upfront about all the activities and help he was getting then
perhaps we won't be jaded and bored by it all.

You're probably right Dodger but there's no harm in trying. I always found "we can't do it" a rather demotivating slogan when I was active in the business.

And J&B - I've told you my involvement (none professionally - 100% as a friend - as it was with Joe and Nizlopi). Alex is totally upfront about everything but hopefully far too busy trying to break it on his own to bother justifying his campaign.

I repeat - no major label; no publisher; no tricks - just great music (wow - what an original idea); a great video (that cost nothing - wow what a breakthrough concept); and real fans (goodness me - remember them?).

Not a bad recipe for a plum pudding.

Good piece on Radio One Newsbeat by Alex. Scott Mills got an incredible reaction to his play of Forever Yours. It's building.

It's 4 today, I'll predict 3 tomorrow, 2 on Christmas Day.

The only thing that could get it to No1 would be that SURGE on Friday and Saturday. Now, is that totally out of the question?

Not completely, I'd say, though unlikely. But in this Day and age - when you can decide you want something and buy it with the click of a mouse, not impossible I'd also say.

I would suspect Wives have predominantly a physical, CD sale base which, I would also suspect, may be waning already. I can also say that both Forever Yours and Teen Spirit are far more commercially, mass appeal tracks. I also notice Forever Yours is charting all around the world (Sweden, Ireland, Australia, Canada) on global iTunes charts.

I love the music industry. My friends are - many of them - in the music world. If I was still a paid member of the industry I think I'd be contributing enormously to it. As it is, my very large regular cheques from iTunes and others keep me comfortable, relaxed and able to assist friends (who listen) with good advice.

Since Vile Perverts are not encouraged in the music industry (if they have been exposed), I remain outside the traditional model but very, very active in the larger, wider media universe.

And with Mealor being incorrect, Alex could be No3 tomorrow. Suspect Donkey will jump into the Top 5 (wrong returns today). It could indeed turn into a Facebook (Nirvana) vs You Tube battle.

bbc chart update
I don't know which charts you're referring to jk,but the official gallup charts don't show Alex Day anywhere in the top 40, also on the mtv midweek charts, he isn't in the top 10.

That's this week's Top 40 from Sunday, not the midweeks.

MY VERY VERY VERY VERY LAST POST OF THE YEAR...

JK knockers!! FFS. The guy has spent his life promoting people and records...it is what he does and he does it brilliantly well...jesus wept...this chart that chart...it matters not one jot. The fact is is that we now all know who Alex Day is!!! If the internet had been about in the seventies/eighties JK would have been doing exactly the same. You see how this works?

It is indeed number 4 on the official midweeks and should be number 3 tomorrow. Not sure why JK is being accused of twisting the facts, they are very simple. As of tomorrow it will probably be number 3, with only 2 records ahead of it in the chart. This of course the toughest chart of the year, when all the big guns go for the top of the charts. For an unsigned artist to go Top 5 at any time of the year is remarkable, to do it Xmas week is stunning. Alex has mobilised his supporters to get behind the release, in the same way Jon Morter mobilised people to join the R.A.T.M. campaign against the X Factor, he is now reaping the benefits and looks like having a huge hit. It's pointless criticising it on an A&R basis, it doesn't matter if you think it's great or shit, his fans are buying it in their droves and this without thousands of pounds in marketing spend. Rather this than a 1960 track about a bloody Donkey....

I would never come on here and start accusing JK of twisting the facts, that's what he does and I assume what he always will do when promoting a pet project. Media spin has been an art practised to the extreme in the marketing departments of record companies long before recent generations of politicians starting freely bending and twisting the facts to suit the story.

To be clear, if Alex makes the Top 5 official BBC weekly charts for Christmas as is being predicted here I think it will be a fantastic achievement and one that everyone involved should rightly be proud of. I certainly didn't think getting a high chart position for such an average song would be possible and admit I got this one wrong.
