Best Eurovision Song Ever 13 Years, 5 Months ago

For me this has got to be the best Eurovision Song Ever. How it didnt' win is beyond me. I guess the fact that it was entered one year after Bucks Fizz's 1981 victory was against it.

It was a perfect pop song, great chorus and middle eight and the duo had great chemistry and looked really cute.

I hadn't heard that one before, but I don't think it can be called the best Eurovision Song Ever. It's not very good.

I like this Cliff song better.

The first two I really find pretty bad.

Gigliola Cinquetti's song, however, is a classic.

It's not surprising that many British singers (Dusty....) had some of their biggest hits with translations of Italian pop songs.

I was going to hijack the thread to mention one of the world's most successful songwriters, until I noted that he won the Eurovision 20 years ago with "Insieme" (together).

It's a creditable but uninspired song. But he also wrote massive hist for Italy and France that have become standards. His hits in Italy include "L'italiano", "Mi piacerebbe" and "Donna donna mia".

These were covered by a succession of triple-A French performers such as Joe Dassin, Dalida, Claude François and Michel Sardou giving him a whole separate career.

An amazing pop writer, backed by an amazing publisher.

And ever since I voted for THIS as the best ever UK entry (until Gina G) - one of the "brothers" has been in touch regularly...

for better quality sound...

Wasn't the gorgeous instrumental in Eurovision? That's the classic version. Paul Mauriat.

Monsieur Mauriat covered 'Love is Blue' after it was in the Eurovision. Another instrumental around this time was Ami Caline (Soul Coaxing) done originally by Michel Polnareff and covered by Raymond Lefevre which was a big hit. That wasn't in Eurovision though..

The original title was Âme Caline. I had never heard the orchestral version and find it a tad cheesy I have to say. And 'Soul Coaxing' is a bit odd too, as caliner is 'hug' or 'cuddle' in English.

Anyway, Polnareff is fantastic. There was a tribute album done at the end of the 90s with artists from all round the world covering his songs, including bands like Pulp, and also artists from Japan and Africa. A great album, including a really nice cover of Ame Caline by Marc Almond.

Here's the original:
