On the BBC news website they have a discussion on the Alternative Brits:

In the comments field someone put that all of the songs in the single charts sound the same.

Now this is what my parents said to me when I was a kid. But looking at the charts now I believe it is true.

The reason being that when I was a kid everyone had a record player so anyone of any age could buy music and if enough people did it would be a hit. Thus the charts had pop, MOR, Heavy Metal, Reggae, country etc.

But nowadays the singles chart is made up of downloads so in order to buy a song you have to have a PC/iphone/whatever in order to buy music. That is mainly at the younger end of the market as older, more savvy people simply use Spotify or illegally download the songs they want. So the charts reflect this.

Not sure this will change any time soon!

I have a theory that in 2019 there be no compact discs everything be digital and overrated 3D.

The only way artists will make money in through gigs and merchandise, yes downloads are illegal through share files but there too many people doing it so people get a way with it, they have fined people and put some on prison but the next person does.

I bet HMV and Blockbuster Video will fold in 3 years. I miss Ourprice a great indie chain and I loved MVC too.

Waterstone's is suffering it's all on the Kindle and people go to charity shops to get best sellers cheaply.

I dread what will happend 2052 when I be mid sixty.
