Gimme Some - Brendon 13 Years, 3 Months ago
Just seen on TOTP:

Why was this released (as a UK Product) on Magnet?

Rather good; by this point I'd gone off running a label and let Magnet have it for a few months. I had lunch with Brendon a few months ago and told him I really regretted trying to turn him into a pop star; he was a great writer and I should have broken him as a singer/songwriter. He's still making good music and remains a really nice guy.

Wasnt the follow up a cover of ABBA's "Rock Me"? Or did i dream i heard it on the radio at least once when it was released? I remember the "b" side "Changing My Life Wont Do" being rather good. A Brendon original i believe!!

Seems you have something in common with one of the song's writers. Pointed out by the TopOfThePops1977 Twitter account.

"Two of the people behind “Gimme Some” were later convicted of sex offences. #TOTP

Co-writer Richard Finch was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010 for 11 sex charges involving teenage boys… #TOTP

… And Brendon’s version was produced by Jonathan King. #TOTP"

Finch was a member of KC and the Sunshine Band. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Finch_%28musician%29

It's a bit like hip hop innit? No respectable rapper hasn't been convicted of something.

I thought you had sold UK records and yourself (as a producer) to Polydor/PolyGram.

No; they just took on the non exclusive distribution - like Decca did - I continued to produce for whoever I liked (i.e. Bay City Rollers - Bell - never been paid) and I could place my tracks with other labels if I liked.

I started going off being a "label boss" when 10cc broke contract for more money; I continued for a few years but my heart wasn't in it - despite huge offers to buy the label I never sold it or let others run it.

This week's TOTP had some good stuff on it (especially the The Rubettes). There were no real poor songs, although I thought Brendon's was the weakest.

Musically I couldn't give a stuff whether tom, dick or harry had a criminal conviction or not.

Last Gimme Some TOTP this thursday as it's peaking... If I recall Brendon sings this one live (look out for a black mike rather than the silver fake calrec).

Rock Me tx date was 24.5.77 and it get's one show when it was in the breakers.
