Elton hasn't had a hit for decades. Hump - not for centuries.

Katrina had had one hit 12 years earlier. That's a sloppy point.

Yesterday: 'Englebert's has really grown on me but not a hope being on first.'

Today: 'Was he on too early? Yes, televoters tend to forget, but it's a small thing'

Again, sloppy thinking.

Katrina was picked because it was a hit song - she happened to be a seasoned performer; Hump would have won with a hit song.
And being on first didn't help him but it simply wasn't an instant hit either.

Read your post again - sloppy. One post being on first is crucial, the next it's a small thing. One minute having a hit recently is important is important, the next it isn't.

Being on first didn't help but the fact that it had little instant appeal was what killed it. Going with a name artiste is a mistake unless you have a striong song for them to sing - then it makes no difference. Nobody ever heard of Loreen before.

he was drawn one, he was not at his best and he just disappeared on the night amongst some excellent performances, notably spain, estonia, germany, serbia,
why did jamie cullen write a song for germany and not us ? having said that i don't think that song would have suited the hump
i don't believe the hump would have won with a hit song either, may be 50 years ago but not aged 75
the question is jk who will the bbc select to represent the uk in 2013 ?
i'd give blue another chance, they came 5th with the televote last year, it was the jury vote that sabotaged them

Tom - my post makes it clear; it doesn't matter WHO (except to the stoopid media); it's the SONG that matters; the performer, famous or otherwise (and I prefer a terrifically talented newcomer) comes a distant second.

Loreen?

Gotta say I agree with you JK, however, the Russian grannies were cute and the song was bouncy but I can't remember it. Sweden's song was very good and the momentum took them but well play to you for tipping it months ago. I should have put a few bob on it back then haha. JK what the UK needs is an Idol style competition to find the singer as well as an Idol type competition to find the song. Put the best a&r talent we have to judge it. Is this a new TV show? Beware producers my lawyers are watching haha.

I'm with JK, although with a more memorable song (which is a more useful definition than a "better" song), the resulting success could have been magnified by his name. In other words, with a great song he could have really gotten huge extra press.

But come on, what's with the "hump" comments? A bit of respect for a guy that gave the Eurovision a shot when most people in his position are slowing down on the golf already.

"Instant" is the word I used when running the UK end Mike. If Hump had recorded Euphoria (don't laugh - Shirley Bassey did Pink brilliantly) it would have won, whether he was on first or not.
It's the hit that matters - and then the selling of it.

i have to disagree, it is the song plus the artist plus the draw plus presentation in that order. if it were just the song then there would be some different results plus the bookies would not offer any market as you, jk, would pick the winner every year and we would all back it and put them out of business
as for the hump singing euphoria and winning, not a chance, absolutely no chance, however the thought of the hump trying to sing euphoria did make me smile, thank you for that image

Ah Tom, given the right producer everything is possible (and I am - was - a very good producer; twice voted best in the world).

if you produced the hump, singing euphoria or something similar, to eurovision victory then you would be the best producer of all time
