A&R etiquette.... 12 Years, 9 Months ago
Hello,

Recently a record label showed interest in my demos, asked the right questions; my age, location if i played any instruments etc.
The final correspondence i had from them was nearly a week ago. They said they were "doing the groundwork" before they sent me their policy through. I just wondered if i should send them a reminder or play it cool, i've never been in this position before and i'm unsure which way to play it. Any advice would be welcome, thank you in advance.

Regards

Andrew.

Hello,

Will do, cheers JK. Although according to De-Caf i shouldn't bother.

Best wishes

Andrew

Andy, I don't mean to be rude but right now I'd turn down your material. Not because the recordings are low quality (I've signed singles with a lesser quality demo than yours) or because of the retro style but because there is no real substance as yet.

My advice is:

1: Keep working at it and honing your craft.
2: Ignore this label that's interested. I predict they'll ask you for money one way or another, don't be tempted, it's a trap.

Sorry, this must be horrible to read but I worry someone is trying to take you for a ride, I've seen it so many times before and I'm just trying to help.

A bona fide record company does not hang about, neither do they 'send their policy through'. K's right, there's no deal. They're just talking bollocks.

Hi K,

I know what you mean, if it's too good to be true....

Hi Andy

Who is the label? Are they known or just a small indie? If they are a big label then
give them a week or two and follow up. From my experience indies will fax through or
email you a deal memo of some sort but they would do it quickly. Majors will um and ah
for a bit unless there is a bidding war in which case they will make you an offer quickly.

Just had another listen to your demos.

Stone Cold Woman has potential. You need to bring out the chorus, make it lift and emphasis
the hook. Also write a synth lead line with another hook.

the ABC of hit songs is Kylie Minogue Can't Get You Outta My Head.

Each line is a hook, from the intro (la la la), the chorus I cant get you outta my head
and the verses. Very simple, annoying but simple.

You sound a bit like Gareth Gates by the way.

Hi DJKZ,

The label is only a small indie and to be honest i don't think i'll hear anything further from them. I'm glad you like Stone Cold Woman, i'm still fond of it as i feel there is a song in there somewhere.

Regards

Andrew.
