Won't rise but a decent hit again and probably 100,000 sales - totalling around 500,000 in 2012 (counting the 2011 Forever Yours; December to December).

Not bad for an unsigned 23 year old without management, agent, PR or any of the other profit draining functions.

100,000 sales JK?
Surely better than number ten then?

If only in the UK - yes, probably Top 5; but if global (new model... the internet is bigger than Britain) probably not.

Mind you many UK hits only sell in the UK and don't chart (as Alex has) in the USA, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Slovenia, New Zealand, India, Australia, Japan....

If Alex stays Top 20 in the UK, he should sell 20-30,000 here, the rest globally.

Still at 12; not bad but disappointing. Second highest New Entry.

I've been trying to get my head around this Alex Day, I get there is comedy value but is there actually anything else to it ?
It sounds very dated, like I've heard it before from the late 70's/early 80's as a one off, Funny HA HA sort of record.
People are buying it though I just wonder why.

I think he simply makes music he enjoys; plays all the instruments; produces and arranges himself; it's not AC (used to stand for Adult Contemporary; now it's Automated Crap - not that it's all bad; Beautiful was good AC for 1D and the last Ollie Murs was decent AC).

Doesn't sound like an X Factor contender or Bruno Mars or any other current performer. Very much not the stuff radio plays. Tongue often in cheek but not always. Some versions of other songs (This Kiss; Lady Godiva). Good videos. Just unlike anything else, as you've stated.

I actually agree Johnathan, he is doing his own thing and is doing it very well from the views/sales, I guess where I was more coming from was musically I found it hard to digest but like I said before people are buying it so it really doesn't matter about getting it or not getting it, (It's working) and so he should be championed in some way for creating this himself.

Why has this single performed so badly? One week at #25 and then it disappears.

After the Top 5 success from last year expectations most have been much greater. A Top 30 single from an unsigned act is a great result but not when compared to previous efforts.

Sadly yes; there is one simple reason why it did less well than we hoped and that was why we anticipated an early collapse.

It sold just under 50,000 so can't complain too much.

"We"???

JK can you declare your interest in Alex Day as you often talk as if you are part
of a team but then contradict yourself by saying he does his own recording, production
etc. Why don't you tell us the truth about how involved you are with Alex Day's music.
No harm in being involved but you seem to contradict yourself a lot as regards this.

I simply give him advice and ideas; the trendy word is Mentor; I prefer the word Friend.

Well we can certainly see the influence a mile away.
Good work I must say thought I really do not like Stupid Stupid
despite it being an annoying catchy number. Re-release it for summer
with a better video.

I don't understand this comment - What is the simple reason why it did less well than hoped?

As far as I could tell it had all the required Alex Day ingredients - a hook ridden poppy song with a quirky/funny video. Though not sometime I'd ever play for my own listening pleasure I can see how it might appeal to a 15 year old girl. So why did it fail to deliver?

I'm afraid Magnus or Mangus, that's something I'm not willing to divulge; take it from me that, had all gone according to plan, it would have been No3 in the chart, though not beating either the X Factor winner nor the bad Hollies charity cover.

Shame you don't feel you can discuss it, even in an oblique way that would break any confidentialities, "trade secrets" or artist relationship issues.

It does seem strange though that a subject such as that can't be discussed here on a music industry discussion forum. I'll respect your decision not to tell but do find it hard to believe there was a single "slam dunk" reason for the fact that Stupid, Stupid didn't enter the charts at #3

Re:Alex Day No10 in today's Midweeks 12 Years, 5 Months ago
One (if not the) reason for the chart performance was simply the recovery of the singles marktet: There were a lot more singles / downloads sold than last year. Especially in the week Alex Day tried to make the Top 10.

Without the media / the backing of a major label he can "only" sell to his fanbase.

With 50.000 sales that is still a very, very great success. How many downloads would he have to sell on a major label to earn the same amount of money?

Re:Alex Day No10 in today's Midweeks 12 Years, 5 Months ago
It was the wrong decision and a mistake.
Alex Day will have to release his singles when the sales are low to chart highly.
No offence or anything against him it is just that radio would not support an
independent unsigned act or label when they are not greasing their palms in whatever
clandestine way this goes on now. Alex is an outsider so will only get small amounts
of airplay and unless he comes up with a monster monster hit which defies all logic
then he can't really force their hand.
Independent music is having a torrid time because there is no 'scene' that acts as
an alternative driving force. Youtube could do it but only if all indies pool together
which is unlikely seeing that they are too diverse. So best practice is to release like
other fanbase acts did such as Westlife and get in the record books and forget Xmas number
one.
