I don't think anyone is defending Gary Glitter's actions, although some of us do try to put them into context.
If the media put as much effort into tracking Bin Laden as they do into stalking Gary Glitter, then maybe he'd have been found by now. Or even if they traced the non-celebrities who were responsible for taking and distributing the original photos.
In short, there are people in the world who are more dangerous than Gary Glitter, but he is a much easier target ... and there's still money to be made from his name in the headlines.

Tracking Gary Glitter is less likely to upset the Powers That Be, result in getting one's gut spread up a wall by automatic gun fire, or some rococo combination of the two... AND sell more copies of the Daily Schadenfreude. The bottom feeders win all round...
