If anyone saw this brilliant Oscar winning programme on channel 4 on Saturday night, you will have witnessed at first hand the American equivalent of British police officers prepared to lie on the witness stand. Clues - not a hair out of place. Polite. Usually overweight. Speech delivered in a monotonous, flat police speak. Designed to minimise emotions and thus conceal lies. Eyes shifting slightly. Lying through their teeth, as subsequently proved, with virtually no career consequences. Thank heavens for public defender Patrick McGuiness, who fought for the truth. But how many innocent men and women aren't lucky enough to find genuine, caring lawyers? It could be you. Fight for the victims of injustice everywhere, if you have any decency at all. JK
