I'm actually rather disappointed by the final 21 - for example, Bleak House is a better Dickens than Great Expectations, but there are some gems in there. Philip Pullman is superb but isn't it rather cheating to allow three novels to pose as one? If so, why not the Harry Potter series? I can't understand those who claim JK Rowling can't write - I think she's brilliant. Ditto Stephen King who ought to be represented. Glad to see Rebecca in there - any novel that dares never to name the heroine and has a villain as spooky as Mrs. Danvers deserves acclaim. Orwell's 1984 remains a work of genius.
Heathcliff and Cathy are still the ultimate lovers. Thank God Alice missed out - I reread it recently and it stinks. You'll never get a list everyone agrees with, thank God...talking of which, how come The Bible didn't make it? A truly spectacular work of fiction.
