John Peel

I have many happy memories of Peely, ranging from his perfumed garden
through Johnny Reggae to the Cuban Boys and beyond. My funniest
recollection was at the Reading Festival when Courtney Love was performing
with her band Hole just after Kurt died. She was in a terrible state,
stoned out of her mind, out of tune and staggering across the stage. I
thought it was embarrassing - Peely thought it was terrific - illustrating
her courage. Before the end of the set we went back stage and sat on the
grass with a couple of beers. When she finished. Courtney was unable to
walk down the ladder and sat on the top step, legs apart. She was clearly
not wearing any underwear. John, I said, I think we've just seen
Courtney's HOLE.

I shall miss him. A light gone out.
