I AM THE MORAL MAJORITY! JK
Melanie Phillips in the Mail asks "Why don't Britain's politicians have the
guts to champion OUR moral majority?". May I suggest that she simply has failed
to understand what our "moral majority" is?
I believe I represent the moral majority. That may seem strange, coming from
someone locked up in Her Majesty's Prison for seven years. But, ignoring for
the moment the fact that I happen to be innocent of the convictions against
me, I'm proud to stand up and say "there's nothing wrong with sex; there's
a lot wrong with abuse". I've been jailed for abuse but I have never and would
never condone abuse.
What do I believe in? Compassion, decency, kindness, tolerance and love.
I don't appreciate bitchiness and sourness and hatred.
I don't believe in the taking of life and most people agree with me. Despite
the right wingers espousing the death penalty, and therefore saying that it's
OK for society to kill people in our name, I'm delighted that our
representatives, illustrating the silent, moral majority, refuse to allow our
government, in our name, to murder people.
I don't believe in telling others who to love and how. That's up to them, as
long as they don't harm their partners or pressurise them into doing something
they don't want to. Educate everyone, restrict sexual legality to those capable
of understanding the ramifications and consequences, and delight when two people
find love without telling them to conform to our morality, that's what I say.
I can't understand why anyone, gay or straight, would want to get married but
if they do, good luck to them. It's not for society to ban their beliefs. Some
people choose to believe in Jesus. Fine by me; I wouldn't want society to stop
them, though I don't share their beliefs.
Likewise, I don't condemn those found guilty by our erratic judicial system.
I've watched it go wrong so many times. I gather, from the Department of
Constitutional Affairs, that there have been 85,000 miscarriages of justice
remedied by the Courts of Appeal in Great Britain over the past two decades.
How many others are there that could not afford the resources or energy, I
wonder?
Melanie refers to Bush's "moral clarity". I think it's simplification. The
stupids find headline morality easy to understand. But true morality is more
complex and has no room for hate. Whilst Bush may give his followers the easy
way to live, some of us see the tragedies caused by his and Blair's simplistic
policies as truly appalling.
I belong to the TRUE moral majority, like the honest people of Great Britain
and the world.
