Live Aid, King Aid and my attitude towards celebrity charity. PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 12 February 2006
I'm sure Bob genuinely cares about Africa and starvation. But I hated Live Aid and the heckling, blackmail, one dimensional aspect of it. Forcing people into giving, not thinking things through (the consequences of Live Aid... rich corrupt officials, less donations to existing, better run charities, lousy records clogging up the charts, hypocritical worship from tabloid brains and so on)... careers have benefitted from pretending to care ever since SHOW BIZ began. I'm not saying that's what motivates most stars but I've never liked it.

Now to answer the second part of Bobwatch's question (and my friend Titch covered it in another post) - I've never cared what people I don't know think of me, whether it was "talented pop star" (I wasn't) or "vile pervert" (I'm not). And yes, I do like irritating and aggravating people because I think that's one of the few ways to wake up those whose brains have gone to sleep.

But I certainly wouldn't have planned or suffered the past 5 years through choice. However, now they have happened, I fully intend to make the most of them. We are all fortunately able to benefit from our experiences and I've learned more in the past 5 years than in the previous 50.

Hopefully that knowledge can benefit humanity. And I mean humanity. The decent, tolerant, loving species I believe us to be... not the negative, malicious, spiteful, vengeful race we are becoming. Lecture over!
