Hi ONE YEAR AT HER MAJESTY'S PLEASURE! September 27th - exactly a year ago, in 200l, I was convicted of crimes I didn't commit, after a jury of well meaning but brain dead morons, one of whom walked out in disgust at what was going on, proclaimed me guilty. My eleven 'peers' had no concept of the effect of publicity or celebrity. They could not understand the natural inclination to exaggerate about famous people. As years go by, a chance casual meeting can become a full blown romance in the imagination, especially when there's a load of money or attention waved in front of noses. Never mind .the PRISON EXPERIENCE. Here's the JK observation on the last twelve months. THE PRISON SERVICE - excellent but frustrated. Predominantly decent men and women trying their best to do a job that NOBODY appreciates. The vast majority go out of their way to make life bearable for very disturbed, unhappy, disillusioned people. INMATES - fascinating. Three types - the truly guilty of bad deeds are often good people who made a mistake or, at worst, have an evil streak. Very few if any are totally bad. Shades of grey - not black or white - and the prison experience makes one more tolerant and understanding. The second type is the truly innocent - tragic, unfair, ruined men who have suffered at the hands of corrupt, lazy British police methods and legal anomalies. They need care and attention and understanding. Can you imagine the many who are now frequently being found innocent after years - like Stephen downing? They are victims of a far worse crime than almost any other. And nobody fights to free MOST of them - only dead bodies and blood warrant campaigns. The third type is the vast majority - those guilty of a far lesser crime than their convictions and sentence. I'm in that category. For breaking a law now considered so absurd that it has been changed (different ages of consent for both genders), I've been given seven years. Most, in this category, are men who have had domestic arguments with their partners or wives and are serving years for rape. Please remember - sex offences need no proof, have no statutes of limitations, guarantee anonymity for accusers and provide cash rewards on conviction. But other offences also get exaggerated - the police are told that the ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS. Inmates in this third category are rightly indignant and damaged and many are decent people, good company and totally disillusioned by British injustice. THE MEDIA. Hey, I've been a part of it for 36 years. I love it. The totally fictitious stories haven't, in any way, surprised me - I could have written them myself, if I was on automatic pilot. They lack any creative imagination or originality, and are SO badly composed. Have you noticed incidentally, that whilst every walk of life, from police officers to judges, has been trapped in the PORNOGRAPHY net, you never read about journalists or editors being nicked? Yet the largest amount of pornography resides on the hard drives of our national newspaper workers. All for 'research purposes', of course! LIFE IN GENERAL - This is the best thing that ever happened to me. I wouldn't have changed it for ten million quid. Mind you, before it started I'd have paid £10 million to avoid it, but life has many surprises. It's been an incredible, valuable, enjoyable experience. Prison DOESN'T work. Half the prison population should NOT be inside. It destroys many people and has no effect at all on most of the rest. It's improved my life enormously. Here's to the second year! JK More 24.9.02 MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH! The Parliamentary Committee looking into sex offences has recommended ANONYMITY for the ACCUSED and this has been ENDORSED by none other than the DAILY MAIL, in an editorial A JUST PROPOSAL (23/9/02). Had this been in place two years ago, TRAWL BY MEDIA would not have worked and I would not have been arrested or charged. A major blow against false allegations, if it becomes law. Now let's get statutes of limitations in place. And a need for PROOF. And sort out the compensation/media interview payment situations. Remove the motives and the crime of false allegations will shrink, if not disappear. JK
