don't forget the 'expert' witnesses who make a mint from bad science. Remember the Cot Death 'Expert' who's poor command of statistics got him a knighthood
and a steady old living putting innocents away (some are still awaiting appeal).
Even when cleared, they have to put up with the suspicion of 'there's no smoke without fire' that hoi poloi seems so fond of applying... until it's their sister in the dock...
A lot of statistics based medicine is little better than voodoo... in fact I'd sooner trust a bag of chicken bones than the mathematical abilities of most medical students who were my contemporaries...
BTW, the story made the front page of the BBC News web site...
I tend to avoid print media like the plague. It doesn't even have the redeeming quality of being soft , strong and absorbent
