Driver Information Systems - incorporating satnav and traffic reports - are almost a mandatory requirement now.
Particularly in London and the Home Counties, and when heading for ferries/airports etc.
The technology used in the Systems is amazing - allowing you, also, to make calls and sent texts/emails, hands free.

And what do you with your other hand Spee ?
Two hands on the steering wheel, at all times!
Apart from systems for vehicles, the smartphone (iPhone/Galaxy) is so helpful - you just say 'ring Andrew' and it does.
Find out what's on in your local cinema, sports venue, theatre - and there are apps for everything - including fixtures and results.
Only have mine a month - and haven't used a fraction other it's potential...

Back in '03 I moved down to London, Forest Hill (for those who don't know that is south of the river, next to Catford). I saw a job advertised in "Bottom Spankers & Nappy Wearers Free Ads Weekly" or some such I really liked the look of and would have suited my officious spiteful, 'Blockwart' personality down to the gwound, already (yes it was a Jewish firm) advertised in Golders Gween (North London for those who don't know), so I rang for an interview which was to be at 11:00 (if I remember rightly). My only experience of driving in, or rather around, London at that point had been the S.Circular and The Catford Gyratory *cue Death March music*. (Mind you there used to be a cracking Mickey D directly on the Gyro).
In my naivety I thought the 15 miles would take me, oh, a couple of hours- I think the AA Route Planner said 1.5 hours but because I have a neurosis about punctuality, especially for a job interview, I gave myself some time in hand.
This one writes itself. I got into my my high powered Saab at something like 08:30, two full packs of smokes, large coffee jammed between my legs "Be Prepared" as my former scout master (who later went down for that False Allegation all scoutmasters go down for btw) would have said and set off...I really, really, have a 'thing' about being late. Finally got to where I needed to be at about 12:30.
I should add that the Boss was still prepared to see me (probably because it was a job no sane person would have wanted to do) but the moment I said where I had come from it was clear to us both that a daily commute, had to be with my own car, was out of the question.
Oy Weh. I had really wanted that job. How often in life does a job come along you KNOW you were made for, already? Damn you North Circular! Joking aside-it still rankles.
