I thought I had read all of Orwell's essays, but memory of the one about Dali escapes me. He nails it as usual: if one can offer an exceptional quality, usually very high commercial value or great critical acclaim, one gets 'benefit of clergy.' The idea being that one is not of the normal folk and can't or shouldn't be held to the same rules.
Can Kevin Spacey claim Orwell's benefit of clergy? He's generally highly regarded in screen and stage acting and as a theatre director. Can he be described as 'great' like Lawrence Olivier or Orson Welles though? Probably not, but he can (and has) already played the gay victim card which protects him a bit. Let's see...
I have to say the point that nobody (not even DLT or poor Jimmy Savile who saved many more lives than he had false accusers) should be airbrushed out of history by anyone with a decent moral conscience (not Lord Hall Hall who will get his; Karma is poised).
