TOPIC: RIP Peter Wyngarde 90
#171658
RIP Peter Wyngarde 90 6 Years, 3 Months ago
I knew him quite well in the 60s and 70s; a very early victim of homophobia when caught in a cottage (public toilet) and prosecuted by the delightfully homophobic British police, always happy, then as now, to persecute a pervert. Many tales I can tell about Peter; he had a flat, then, by the Kensington Odeon near Earl's Court. I was often confused (name only) with his TV character Jason King. He was the brilliant voice in Flash Gordon and knew Freddie Mercury.

I dont think it is homophobic to prosecute people for having sex in a public toilet. Its nothing to with them being gay.

Obviously, when you have policemen waving their penises around hoping to entrap men its a different issue, but who the hell wants to listen to or see sex in toilets (or parks) and not be able to send your children there?

I could have sworn Peter Wyngarde was dead already. I used to swan around in a Jason King outfit as a child.

Yes the Pretty Police were out in force and more often than not it was them that waved their dicks around to attract hapless victims like Wyngarde.

But often they just busted a man because of a furtive look as they did the Australian broadcaster Alan Jones in the late 80s at Piccadilly Circus.

Poor Alan was lucky at the time as he had powerful pals like M.Thatcher & Lord Archer but he really should not have worn his favorite pink jumper.

BUT WE HAVE PROGRESSED
since then...no longer is a conviction needed to destroy....just as an accusation !!!

(a good time to be old but look 30 years young er an gorgeous)

And of course by the time boring George Michael got done, it didn't really affect his career (on a down slope by then anyway). Times do change and as media leaps onto morality, so does public opinion. Cottaging is fine now. We haven't yet reached the stage when paedophilia is regarded as just another aspect of life.

It's pretty well known how the police used to set out to 'trap' celebs they knew were gay. Wilfrid Brambell was caught in that way soon after Steptoe got popular (they couldn't be bothered before that, of course).

As for Wyngarde, I heard that 'Rape' track once and wondered what on earth he was doing - it was very disturbingly sinister. Maybe I missed something. Fascinating man, though, I'd love to read a book full of anecdotes about him.

I could never work out why people have/ had sex in a germ ridden, grotty and stinky public bog ?

When I'm out in avoid and forbid my self from using the the thunderboxes, it's not hard to wait until you get home then finally you're king of the throne.

My nan always said the cleanest 'comfort stations' are in Sydney.

It reminds me of this old clip from a Beeb doc - early 60s I think - featuring an interview with some elderly bloke who was the attendant at one of London's old walk-down public loos. He said, 'We get so many drunks, drug addicts an' perverts come dahn 'ere, when someone comes in to actually have a shit it's like a breath of fresh air!'
