House of Cards 6 Years ago
Haven't bothered watching this show as I thought the original was too good. Remakes can often put me off.

But ever since they fired Kevin Spacey I wouldn't watch it on principal.

Same goes for that Getty film ( and I love Christopher Plummer).

In fact I think I'd boycott any film made by the producers and directors after that.

The way Kevin Spacey has been crucified on accusation alone is an abomination and very scary.

Hollywood has a history of being very brave and confronting societies ills. It's had an enormous impact on many issues..racism etc.

Of course there can be $100Ms tied up in film productions and 10,000s of jobs directly and indirectly.

But I reckon actions like removing Spacey are ridiculous. The public are not as vicious and cowardly as the media are.

Just as the #MeTooCompo "movement" is gradually fading away (it was a Hollywood invention to start with) as it means fuck all for the vast majority of people on the planet.

Note Rose McGowan (who she?) has faded back into obscurity (will she ever get a film role again ?) after flogging her book..that's the book with her allegations that was over 2 years in the planning and which the publishers were fully aware of her claims for over 12 months yet stayed silent..so much for caring about abuse)

prediction: Spacey will go on to continue his career in European films where they don't give a stuff about UK / USA Puritan driven claptrap.

I'm a big fan of Kevin Spacey and I'll still watch his films and plays. So maybe he did have a couple of romantic misadventures years ago. I certainly won't cast the first stone.

I think the beauty of the British version of House of Cards was that it wasn't afraid to maintain the sense of cynicism in its characters. Whereas American TV can't bear to have completely cynical central characters. So the show morphs from a satire about politicians into yet another wish fulfilment fiction about a woman making it to the White House. They can't possibly suggest that female politicians are just as devious, unpleasant and self-obsessed as male politicians (in spite of Hillary's best efforts to prove it), and so all of the original bite has gone from the show.

That's good Pru. Yes - I agree with Hedda - I don't like retreads either way - I always preferred the American hits in the 50s and 60s to the UK copies (mind you; I was happy to try my own versions of hit songs later but my versions always tried to be totally different - compare my Hooked On A Feeling to the BJ Thomas original). Films and TV - give me the original any day. Plus I do now deliberately send to Coventry a lot of stuff made by the weak or lazy - like those who dump falsely accused innocent people at the whisper of gossip.
