Sean Cox, 53, of Dunboyne, County Meath in the Irish Republic is in hospital with a head injury.

Liverpool FC said it was "shocked and appalled" by the incident.

It seems these young Roma fans - with belts as weapons - attacked an easy target, a middle-aged man outside a pub close to the ground.

A regular visitor from Ireland - to Anfield games, and without 'form' of any kind. Specialist CCTV police identified two attackers (so far) from the terraces.

The victim remains critical in a Liverpool neurosurgical facility. UEFA will punish LFC severely; they've been banned from European competitions in the past.

I think you will find that where the abuse of youngsters is proven is not limited or defined to a particular form of sport ITK; football is just more high profile. Poor homophobic puns will also - just to advise - not strengthen your "analysis"...nor contrast your intelligence favourably with the so called violent idiots you see all football fans as...

ps there is also such a thing as the aggressive use of language as well as fists by Roma fans, which can also be used to start defining "thugs" or "louts".....

Yes, just how many deaths are they (directly / indirectly) responsible for in total ?

Not only are deaths (of this kind) not exclusive to sports gatherings, music venues/events have a higher overall mortality rate.

Just two examples of music event fatalities.

At Southgate, Kentucky - 165 people died in May 1977.

At Buenos Aires, Argentina - 194 died in December 2004.

Should the performers, security, promoters or fans be blamed?

What was the main cause of the Hillsborough deaths - a dated stadium, inept policing or the fans?

I wonder if this kind of smugly ignorant garbage will ever be expunged through exposure to facts.

I dont understand, Spee. Why would UEFA punish Liverpool football club for a crime apparently committed by supporters of the other team?

Security is primarily the responsibility of the home/host team.

At the risk of starting a riot, no one has yet mentioned Hillsborough.

We all now know that the fans were not responsible ... so who did trample over 100 people to death?

Its the mentality, andrew.
The childish slogans and the simplistic you-bad, me-good ideology (not to mention the tribalistic face painting !)

Helps the simpletons understand where they belong.

Despising over half the population of the world - billions of football supporters - must be a very hard life burden to bear.

On you, your family and undoubtedly many friends - in numerous social circles. But you are most unique.

In thinking that those who watch the biggest sport on earth - ever (with more followers than all individual religions) have anything in common.

Yes, some are tribalistic, have slogans, face paint etc. - but most are normal and natural people, out to enjoy their leisure-time. Just like you try to do.

Thats why its popular, honey!
If you appeal to the lowest common denominator you will always get the larger audience - it doesn't tax the brain !

Thats why snooker will always be more popular than chess .... (ah ! hit ball in hole ... their brains can cope with that !!!)

... and The Sun will always sell more copies than the Daily Telegraph.
