Put Mr Smith Goes To Washington on FilmFour while working and couldn't take my eyes off a single frame or ignore a single word.

Why don't they make fabulous, brilliant movies like that anymore?

Every actor, every line, every picture, every plot turn is magnificent.

If you missed this, catch it on FilmFour when it's repeated or buy the DVD - you won't regret it.

I think too many movies are made by ticks in the boxes.

This produces an average movie, the days when those actually creating could have a significant say are gone.

Which means no strange self-indulgent inaccessible and of only interest to the maker type of movie, but it also means many of the classics wouldn't have got past the committee stage.

Bit like the music business

Neutering the creative people is safer for the big corporations but ultimately kills off the great ideas.

They don't make films like that anymore because it's too much for the unimaginative to comprehend.

'This Happy Breed' - caught a bit of it on telly the other afternoon, stopped me in my tracks and made me late for everything. Genius screenplay.

'Sunshine' - tortuously dull and predictable. Don't believe the reviews it's the same old same old - like one of those dreadful Alien movies.
