TOPIC: Losing faith in democracy?

Losing faith in democracy? 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Theresa May says a second referendum would make the British public lose faith in Democracy. I think the first was a terrible mistake - why ask the public for an answer to which they do not have detailed, proper information and for which we are not equipped or trained to decide? I have no idea whether VAT should be lower or higher or whether more money should go to the NHS or more efficiency be demanded. We vote every few years to elect a party to deal with all this (and often get it wrong).

But the majority did decide we should leave the EU. Not "with a deal" - that's for afterwards. Brexit means a hard border in Ireland and all the misery thereafter. It means travel problems and trade problems as ports clog up. It means terrible trade problems. It means hardship and loss of earnings. That's what the public voted for.

Now it is about to happen. I can see no reason why the public should not be asked - do you still want it, knowing the possible outcome? If they do - fine. If not; we revert.

But silly deals and squabbles are just as damaging to Democracy as not leaving. What is May going on about? Does Democracy mean never being given the chance to change our minds? If so, why have General Elections?

If the next vote is to stay, are we going to have another and do the best of three?

I don't see why. As I said, I don't think this was suited to one vote but now it is about to happen there should be a second to make sure the voters still want it.

I think most of us are bewildered and beyond caring.

I agree and there should never have been a referendum. Why was there one? We don't have referendums on whether we should bomb foreigners to death or lock up innocent people - far more important issues that politicians ought to be dealing with and often don't, for fear of alienating the media, our masters.

The referendum was only ever about resolving divisions over Europe in the Tory party, so the refusal of another vote probably has to be seen in that context rather than having anything to do with democracy.

Agree with all before.

It is all such a mess. Referenda should be conducted from a position of knowledge
We now have a lot more knowledge about the outcome..so why not another referendum to ensure "democracy" is served?

It is as if they are going out of their way to make leaving impossible, such as the latest rule that immigrants must be earning at least thirty thousand. What the hell are they thinking? A lot of nurses earn less than that.

Absolutely Honey; further proof of sheer insanity in the Administration. I don't like the look of Javid; almost as bonkers as May.
