This is an Oz story but I think relevant to the UK (and USA).
A ghastly Australian right-wing Minister
Peter Dutton MP has proposed an Oz Sex Offenders Register identifying those who are already on a 'child protection register'(copied form the UK version and administered by local cops) but now identifying where they live as in the US version.
This creepy ex-cop left the Queensland Police shortly after a scandal that involved he & others picking up a group of
Indigenous lads doing no wrong and driving them right outside the city and abandoning them there.
A kind hearted Iraqi born taxi driver returning from a long job picked them and drove them all to their respective homes as they had no money.
Said Minster is responsible for Asylum Seekers fleeing to Australia being incarcerated for years on end (including children who most now have mental health problems) on
Nauru for years on end.
He's also being looked at as he & his wife own numerous "child minding centres" and have received $Millions from the government in grants
A
General Election will be held in probably 3 months and not only is said Minister likely to lose his seat it's looking very likely his conservative party will be swept away in a landslide and the former union boss
Bill Shorten will be Australia's Prime Minsiter by April 2019.
His "sex offender register" is unlikely to ever happen due to timing but really what he is chasing is
headlines.
Peter Dutton engineered the removal of
PM Malcolm Turnbull (who had lovely parties in his harbourside mansion
) thinking he would replace him but it backfired.
Enter some of the more fanatical self appointed "child protection experts" like
Hetty Johnson who unexpectedly has poured scorn on this idea as useless and a stupid idea.
Hetty at one stage caused a huge drama about an art exhibition by the photo artist
Bill Henson- police raids followed. My very rich pals who owned the art gallery all went in exile to Switzerland fearing somehow they would be arrested
.
Then
PM Kevin Rudd condemned the exhibition despite not even seeing Henson's work. For then Opposition Leader
Malcolm Turnbull as a collector of Henson's work it was an embarrassment.
Nothing came of the whole episode.
But Hetty Johnson has actually changed over the years after working in that field for so long. She's become much more sensible and reversed many of her views.
