Austria?
JK I take it you have to visit your local house with with the blue light outside to let them know of your departure and return details to the UK?

Indeed and it features largely in my current novel (about 20% completed) so I wanted to get a feel (ooh Matron); a fascinating place though hard to see beyond the tourism.

Tourism can be problematical - as close to a billion people come to Europe every year.

Over twice as many that any other destination area.

And some centres - like Versailles - are unable to cope with the numbers.

Simply because they weren't built to accommodate millions - on a regular basis.

Many are so interested in the past; though most don't learn from its mistakes.

No Honey love.

It was just a residence for only a hundred years.

Albeit palatial and royal.

These days - about 10 million of us humans want to view it.

UNESCO think it's unique.

Only about 10 miles from Notre Dame.

Exactly 15 minutes drive - they loved my Little Car; thought it was VERY Versailles!

Visiting in person is probably hard to beat, but perhaps you've seen these documentaries on YouTube: "The Real Versailles" with Lucy Worsley and "The Rise and Fall of Versailles" (parts 1, 2, and 3). I watched them some time ago and seem to have forgotten everything that was said apart from how the palace smelled!

I am obviously an idiot, because I have been very close to it and it has completely passed me by.
I shall make do with the documentaries for now.

Oh it is extraordinary Honey and a MUST to visit. I've been several times but this time had ulterior motives! Parking is difficult though (I was lucky) and there are normally thousands of tourists and long queues. I booked online in advance for €20 and had no problem.

Actually.. I might be able to go. I look after someone at home who has been very ill, so havent been able to travel very far for a few years, but he has improved so much lately that it is looking like a proper holiday somewhere is possible soon.

Versailles was taken by the commoners at the time of the Revolution

Churchill was ousted after winning WW2

May will go, despite a strong economy

The common factor

A failure to identify a very unhappy population

This world famous room is still used regularly

For functions and business gatherings

By the French government, and others

It's not mothballed like most of Windsor and Buckingham Palace

And with a greater historical significance

Being where the Treaty of Versailles was signed - ending WWI
