Great photo of him with his hands on his belt, sending the subtle signal to the masses that he's about to do something dodgy.

I despair at the comments. It is beyond belief that some people can be so thick. "If he's innocent, why doesn't he appeal?" Well, he did, and arguably the most damaging conviction was overturned as it was a pack of lies, but that was swept under the carpet and he wasn't allowed to appeal the rest. And so on.

Pure persecution. No mention of one of his convictions being overturned on appeal. If that is kept under wraps, perhaps it's not surprising that some people think he hasn't appealed at all. The Sun has published a similar article.

What this piece graphically illustrates is our morbid fascination with celebrities, and celebrity status.

They serve as an object of worship and disgust - simultaneously representing what we strive to be, and also what we dislike about ourselves.

And, by extension, society.

Some 'gave us our dreams' (Tim Rice, I think).

Making us psychologically smitten - and a sucker for infantile and puerile media coverage of our 'heroes'...

Does this apply to Rolf Harris? I used to enjoy his children's show with Coojee bear, and his paintings, but I cant remember anybody idolising him.

I thought what a nice red jacket he had and how healthy he seems for a man in his 80s.

Sad about his wife.

there must be a million ex-cons walking about.

this is why I can't stand the paparazzi any more even though I knew many..very predatory.

That's my impression too. I wasn't aware of him being much in the news at all in the years prior to Yewtree, but I wasn't paying particular attention to him anyway.

Idolitary doesn't come into it.

My point was about our almost insatiable appetite for pics and news snippets about minor celebrities, like Harris.

To me, Harris is a convicted felon - no longer of any interest, being retired and advanced in age.

But - to others, including the media which sees wide interest - this octogenarian is seen as headline news, periodically.

I see that more comments, have been added under the DM article. Many negative, but also some semi-positive ones*. I gave up trying to post comments challenging the "Rolf is guilty" line a long time ago. They were never published. Very frustrating.

* e.g.

I am in two minds about him. I liked him as a child, he is a talented man. I'm not sure about his convictions, but he has served his time in prison. There is no need for the media to hound him, but I do think he needs supervision - not by the media.

My friends in Maidenhead used to see him around the town regularly. Fans would stop him in the street, and he always took time to speak to them. Also did a fair bit for charity and was seen locally as a top bloke. Nobody could believe it when these accusations started coming to light. If someone like that can fool so many, for so long, who CAN you trust?

I still can't get my head around this story, rolf Harris always seemed a gentle person I believe something disturbing happened to turn him into a paeodofile if its true, how many accosations are being used against famous people that arnt true, hes nearly 90 now he should be left alone his wife has altzimers and the family are taking care of them both closely

i believe he was innocent
