Margaret Thatcher where are you when we need you? 4 Years, 8 Months ago
Margaret Thatcher; what a woman. I just watched the middle years programme of the excellent BBC series. Falklands. Unions and miners strike. IRA and the Brighton bombing. Gorbachev. God, we could do with her now. Of course, Brexit would not even have been contemplated. I disagreed with many of her policies. I think there’s a great deal of good in Communism, for example. But she was a strong Prime Minister and an incredibly good leader. As it happens she was also a very nice and attractive lady and a decent human being with, I always found, a good sense of humour. I loved the 80s - probably the best decade I lived through, though nobody could touch the music of the Sixties. Just think of her leading Britain today. We would be in a far better state.

I agree she was a remarkable woman and leader snd I thought May was awful. But I still struggle to see what she would do differently in this shallow twitter media era, or with the impossible hand May was dealt. Is it in fact imposdible now - whatever one's views of her politics - to sustain a grown up debate or political stance?

To compare politicians in different generations is futile - what would he/she have done, etc.

Winston Churchill was disposed of, after winning the war - as soon as the next general election could be held.

Maybe Stalin was a better leader than Franco; because one of them changed their logic and philosophy in time - to survive.

Comparing different times, to politicians and circumstances is foolhardy.

Eventually, Stalin said that socialism is one country.

Unlike here, where most of our wealth is owned by 1% of the population.

Still, we don't have a budget surplus - and our rising National Debt is rapidly rising.

Towards £2 trillion; it pays for everything (new aircraft carriers etc.).

Rich and poor - the devide is getting wider...fast...

agree partly but also no, I think what is happening today is the end result of Thatcherism but it would not have gotten this far without the evil Tony Blair who put Maggie's Madness on steroids.

I don't believe Maggie was sane. But WOW..did she have the most beautiful porcelain skin (only sort of met her once)

If Blair had not lied about his intentions the current mess would not have come to be.

He was a wolf in sheep's clothing.

How a death..that of the highly decent Labour leader John Smith.. can change destiny. They could never have done a 'Jeremy Corbyn' on Smith.

I'm thinking of becoming a Conservative.

Not a Tory mind you..the current lot are as Denis Healy famously described them : real estate agents and bookie's runners. But that's an insult to those professions. I quite like Bookies..real estate agents not so much.

Someone pass ITK the smelling salts.
