One of the tricks SPAM uses is to piggy back on old existing threads - most of the time our filter simply removes them but every now and then one pops up as "new" and stays on here for an hour or two. The recent one about Nottingham - obviously inspired by Corbyn's visit there today - was from 7 or 8 years ago so I deleted answers but I was fascinated to see that over the years that thread (fairly trivial) has had over 110,000 views. Unbelievable how views mount up. KingOfHits has been here for about 25 years now - one of the very first online sites and forums (inspired, incidentally, by my New York friend Julie's Velvet Rope; a forum for music industry professionals).
Yes I suspect the spamming DOES add to view counts but as the filter removes them pretty quick I don't think they amount to much; I have a feeling that most get dumped before even registering, let alone getting counted. The main reason for huge view figures on old posts is simply time; people want to read a post about Nottingham, click on Google search, find it, peek at it and move on. Over the years that mounts up. But there are also many new visitors every day as older ones drop off, either dead or bored or moving away. I miss some of our old posters like Andrew and ITK and BR and others but remember - after 25 years, much happens.
