I must admit I could not stop laughing jk, you’re so enthusiastic and positive and some of Michael’s remarks that were having a bit of a go at you was just like water off a ducks back to you.. you were engaging, smiling and visibly enjoying yourself.
What you said about appearing on Top of the Pops which you described as the greatest comic experiences you could have where as soon as you did a performance on TOTP down goes the record sales...
I agree with what you said about so many pop/rock stars being brain dead with nothing to say...
Seriously, you don’t really think that all pop stars are imbeciles, do you? Did you forget about the two Brians who both happen to be doctors; I am of course referring to Drs May and Cox!
Back to the show: Parkie was spot on when he introduced you as being uncontrite - is that a real word?; but was Jon Ronson right when he said you were still unrepentant???
Johnnie you’re right, it was a sweeping thing to say and not all of today’s
(& yesterday’s) pop recording acts fall into that category... Mind you, most teen idols and
those coming through the LA pop factories are probably more concerned about looking good for their selfies, Instagram feeds and trying to crack the code in becoming a viral star on Tik Tok.
But then, pop was never a serious thing, it’s always been about teen adulation, fast money and celebrity.
Fortunately there’s a whole gamut of other styles, artists and recordings available for those times when you want to listen to something other than pop pap.
Brian, whoops I mean Kenneth, by his own admission concedes that his own output is rubbish. He’s always known that pop is just a fast fun vehicle made mostly for younger people, and can even be a lucrative enough wheeze to buy oneself a vintage Rolls Royce with a special number plate on it! It’s probably the ficklest business around, and I couldn’t personally stomach having to sack so many artist(e)s just because they don’t pull a crowd. The record executive (and ex-Bros bassist) Craig Logan has complained in interviews that he’s spent half of his life sacking people. Could this be the reason Ken transitioned from being a label boss into a media career in the 80s?
Not at all; I've made some great records; discovered some terrific artistes; never ripped anyone off. Love the (old) music industry. Still in it. Just like media, it has its faults. At least I was never the bass player in Bros, surely a purgatory beyond wildest dreams of Hell.
Sending thousands off to their deaths in an unnecessary war wasn’t exactly nice, though at least Britain, for one time only, wasn’t officially involved.
