TOPIC: Prince William
#199012
Prince William 2 Months, 1 Week ago
What a splendid young man; he seems to have inherited the good sides of both his Father and his Mother - both of whom I almost but not quite met, several times. Watching him deal with the footballers I can't help but feel we should give more power to the monarchy and less to MPs. The Queen, Charles, William. Far superior to our past PM's and Cabinets.

I'm a no fan of the royals. Yet he seems like he has level headed over the last few years. It's a pity he can't use his influence on the government's.

The gripe I have with him is he happily perpetuates the dilution of serious mental illness to mere depression. You can be objectively depressed for all kinds of reasons - mortality, persistent debt collectors, unemployment, crime, injustice, etc etc. That's different from clinical depression. But thanks to the woolly well wishers we now regard any kind of depression as a 'mental health issue' that can be 'solved' by some kind of therapy. It can't. This is what is wrong with royals - they're not experts, they're not educated in the area, but they pick up on something and go with it, relying on various 'briefings' and speechwriters. The're patronising parasites.

But doesn't anything that dilutes the idea of a few being "insane" others to showing mental health as a continuum any of us could suffer from - promote empathy for others, and is therefore a good thing?

As for the charge of parasitism they can't win; imagine the howls if they just sat back and didn't try and use their position to promote good in the world?

Yes they 'promote good' - selectively.

Giving standard lifestyle advice, praising heroic deeds/works, honouring the brave etc.

But take Prince Charles, for example - worth hundreds of millions.

Rarely does he (or his family) put his hand in his pocket - to help the destitute.

Such direct intervention is for government, taxpayers, charities etc.

Although admittedly - he is more than willing to pin medals on deserving folk.

While I am no unequivocal supporter of the Royals - clearing the streets of Windsor of rough sleepers for the last wedding particularly stuck in my craw -I'm not sure that throwing endless money from whatever source is the solution to the ills of the world....
